This project really exemplifies what I believe should happen to Meta / Facebook too (the use of interoperable standards). Users should be able to opt to use free and open source self-hostable alternatives that can still keep them in contact with their family and friends that choose to stay behind on a platform. It's the best of both worlds for the individuals, and also means they can more freely move to another platform without being locked in.

Fosscord is free, open source, extendible, self-hostable, decentralised, themeable, secure, encrypted, and compatible with Discord... It's going to be better than Discord! Right now it is still a work in progress, so not everything is fully in place.

Interoperability and Zuckerberg. I highly doubt it. IT is all about control, a true peer to peer, self hosted solution with be immune to targeted adds, as for hoarding metadata for mass manipulation.

Remember, the future is private, which is Zuckerberg's book, means private companies will control the masses. And he is well on his way in implementing this future. My only hope is that he messes this up in a big way, imploding his company along the way.

Some say they could be too big to fail (at least for quite a while). Yes he did actively shut off the XMPP interoperability years ago, so I also doubt he would suddenly now re-enable something like that. But it may well be some legislative action otherwise that happens. Those who really wanted to move away from Meta have already done so, but so many feel unable to do so for fear of losing their friends...
