Most people position the cursor at the beginning of the text, hold the mouse button down, drag the cursor to the end, then release the button. The text is highlighted letter by letter. But this sometimes misses the first or last letter, and then you can reselect carefully, sometimes multiple times. This seems dependent on the source you are selecting from, as many will work perfectly, whilst others are a struggle.
An easier way is double, or even triple clicking and then selecting words or whole paragraphs respectively. Yes, it takes a bit of muscle memory to remember to do it every time, but I must say, it does work quite flawlessly.
